Do You Think for Yourself?

February 27th, 2012

There are all kinds of things in our society that discourage you from thinking for yourself-time pressures, conformity, not knowing what you need to do, desire to please, fear.  If you do not think for yourself, however, then where are you? You have to be able to set your own direction or you are like a reed in the wind. When you are unsure about something, take some time and be resourceful so you can come to your own conclusions. When someone imposes their thinking on you, or things go too fast and you don’t have the chance to think for yourself, let it be, but learn from it. If you let others do your thinking for you, your life isn’t your own, you are not leading and you soon won’t recognize your life. Think for yourself.

The Edge

February 21st, 2012

I once worked with a great coach, Jack Barnard, who said he was “an escort to the edge”. He said his work with people was to bring them to the edge of their comfort zone, because it is at the edge of your comfort zone where change can occur. How often do you go to the edge of your comfort zone? Do you know where it is? Are you afraid to or do you go there willingly so you can change for the better?

What is Managing?

February 15th, 2012

I often use the word managing without reflecting on its meaning. It is such a well-used word in our society. What is managing? I think it is several things: keeping your eye on an endpoint and figuring out how you can reach it, leading others effectively so something can get done, keeping various pieces functioning smoothly, being a good listener and coordinator and often being  “all things to all people”. The next time you are managing, I invite you to reflect on what you are doing.

In coaching we have a concept called “Acknowledgment” where you take the time to recognize what you have accomplished before you run on to the next thing. In that spirit, can you take a moment now to celebrate all you are and have become? My guess is that you have worked hard to be a leader, to grow as a person and to develop your skills. Right now, celebrate yourself and give yourself three examples of what you have created for your life. I celebrate you!
